Our liver is dark reddish and brown. The liver is responsible for helping to detoxify the body, eliminate old blood cells, helps to keep the blood clean, helps the body to get rid of alcohol, and therefore it is very important that we do all that we can to ensure our liver is functioning at its best.

In order for this to happen there are certain foods which we should include in our diet and there are foods that should be avoided. Remember in one of my article on health we looked at foods and determine that some foods which look good, have a wonderful aroma and taste good may not be good for us.

Foods that damage our liver

Besides alcohol which is damaging to our liver, here are some foods we should avoid.

1. Pastries-Pastries are loaded with sugar and can do liver damage, avoid or at least eat very moderately.

2. Candies-Candies are also loaded with sugar and should be treated as pastries.

3. Sodas-Sodas should be treated the same as pastries and candies.

4. Foods that are high in fat should be avoided.

5. Smoking can damage your liver.

6. High salt intake.

7. Some prescription drugs.

8. Believe it or not even some herbal teas have been reported to damage our liver.

Signs of liver damage

1. Dark color urine.                                                     5. Itchy skin.

2. Swelling in the legs.                                                6. Vomiting.

3. Swelling in the ankles.                                             7. Weakness

4. Eyes that take on a yellowish appearance.          8. Abdominal pain

Foods that promote a healthy liver

1. Green tea.

2. Grapefruit juice.

3. Beets.

4. Garlic.

5. Carrots.

6. Apples.

7. Broccoli.

8. Cauliflower.

Our liver is an important organ that benefits our bodies in so many ways so let’s do our best to promote proper liver care.

  1. This is a great article and full of good information on the types of foods we all should have in our diets to promote a healthy liver. I have a new found love of beets and eat them right out of the jar as a snack.
    Would you recommend any detox teas we should be taking?

  2. You’re very right on how our liver is very important for our health. And eating junk foods (it’s missing from your list buddy), those fat and sugars stuffs are going to make our liver work overtime. It’s okay when we’re young but as we age, so does our liver and its capability reduces with time.

  3. I did not know smoking could damage your liver. Thank goodness I don’t smoke, and this is another reason! lol My girlfriend smokes, but if cancer isn’t going to deter her I don’t think ruining her liver will unfortunately. lol In any event can you tell me which herbal teas to avoid. I enjoy drinking tea for the health benefits, but I don’t want to counteract the good with the damage it could be doing. Thanks

    • Good morning Anthony it is so good to meet you and thanks for commenting. When commenting about herbal teas in this way is, for example ginger is good but drinking too much can cause stomach pain so drink in moderation, lemon balm is good but over consuming may cause dizziness, the key is to drink in moderation.

      When it comes to pregnant women and herbal teas however it is best that they get advice from the doctor before drinking. Hope this helps, all the best to you.

  4. I have never really given any thought to how food can damage your liver, I thought that role was restricted for alcohol. Very informative and certainly worth taking into consideration the next time the urge for an abundance of treat foods comes along. Maybe I should spend as much time researching food as I do eating it!

  5. Interesting stuff. Why do you say that sugar damages one’s liver? I’m not disagreeing, simply curious to know. I eat plenty of pastry and sugar!! Yum.

    If you wanted to test your liver function, what tests would you recommend?

    Do you have any thoughts about using TUDCA for liver protection? Or some people recommend milk thistle. Are these supplements any good?

    • Hello joe, thanks for commenting, Too much refined sugar causes a fatty buildup which can cause disease of the liver. As far as liver test is concern you can try the alanine aminotransferase liver test. TUDCA seems to be a good product and is used by bodybuilders because of it benefits. Milk thistle is limited in what it can do, you get more benefits from TUDCA. Hope this helps. Have a good day.
