Taking the inside outdoors

“variety is the spice of life” as they say and to a certain degree, that is true. It is good to live on the edge sometimes or mix it up and just go for it. What is life without living dangerously, in a GOOD way that is?

Over the years I have seen so many garden designs with that added touch of flavor which brought that WOW simply because of pieces of garden furniture that were added.

Don’t get me wrong many home gardens look outstanding without these garden features but to include them would make your garden truly amazing.

My garden oasis

Imagine coming home from a hard day at the office or your place of work and relaxing in a garden-like in the photo above or better still enjoying your weekends in this way with family and friends.

These would be weekends to look forward to. I believe the saying that “a man’s home is his castle” of cost women included we can’t forget the ladies. We should do all that we can to make our homes as comfortable as possible and I believe adding this garden furniture is a plus.

Outdoor Garden Furniture Design

While it is good to add these garden features some consideration should be taken to ensure that you are choosing the right pieces of furniture which will complement your garden.

  • What is your garden style?
  • What is your garden size?
  • What’s the purpose of adding these furniture pieces?
  • How many persons live in your home?
  • Look for comfort
  • Go for quality
  • Choose colors that complement your garden

Outdoor Garden Furniture Design

1. What is your garden style?- Don’t overthink this one because it’s optional. for those who may have an Oriental garden, you may want to include the kind of furniture that complements this garden style or an English garden but then again it’s not a must.

2. What is your garden size?- Gardens are of different styles as they are of different sizes. How strange it would be to have a small garden but yet have large furniture that overpowers your garden, it would look really odd.

Size of furniture should be considered, the size of the furniture should complement your garden bringing balance.

3. What’s the purpose of adding these furniture pieces?- Again why are you adding these pieces of furniture? this will go a long way in helping when it comes to choosing the right furniture.

An example maybe. Wanting to be in a more relaxed state as you connect with or take in all nature has to offer. like we discussed earlier, just sitting back in your garden oasis, your private world, your kingdom now that is something to get excited about or it may be choosing furniture pieces for lunch and dinner functions, what about having occasional barbecues whatever the occasion go for it.

4. How many persons live in the home?- It is good to ensure that everyone is accommodated by getting the right amount of furniture even if that means getting an extra 2-3 furniture pieces, which will ensure that no one is left out including friends and family members who may pay you a visit.

5. Look for comfort- Going for beauty is good but you also want to ensure that both your family as well as yourself and friends are comfortable.

6. Go for quality- Now when it comes to this one we should go for quality, I don’t mean breaking your piggy bank but purchasing garden furniture that will last for years. You don’t want to buy something cheap just for beauty then, having to replace it.

7. Choose colors that complement your garden- Well I don’t want to make this complicated by overthinking this one but in some cases, color coordination as far as garden plants in relation to garden furniture colors can make some impact. Again this is not written in stone so just go for it.

Outdoor Garden Furniture Design

Creating a garden oasis can be so much fun. It is so good to get on the great outdoors and take in all that beauty that can really relieve stress and rejuvenate you. So go for it because life was meant to be enjoyed.

The final word

There is more to be said on this topic but this is just to give some ideas on the beauty of the garden furniture outdoor design. Give it a try this is an exciting venture that will pay off in so many ways.

  1. Hi Norman,

    Wonderful article!

I was looking for some useful tips on how to decor my garden with furniture. This article is excately what I was looking for! I didn’t think about taking the size of my garden. My garden is still in development, but I really want nice furniture so that I spend time with friends and family or rest. What would be better? First, finish styling my garden before buying any furniture or decore my garden according to the furniture?

Thank you for this excellent post!

    • Hello Daniella so happy to see you. Hope all is well with both you and your family. Adding garden furniture is really amazing and can really give that WOW or added flavor. It all depends, it is like juggling a ball but for the most part I would create my garden first that way you will have a clearer picture of what you want.

Hope this help, all the best to you and please let me know how it goes. Have  good day.

  2. With Summer right around the corner here in the UK, it’s now the perfect time for me to start looking for garden furniture, especially for those BBQs with family and friends in the back garden. 😉

But it would be especially awesome to have a patio area that represents my front lounge, so I’ve got the perfect place to chillax in the sun and warm weather after a tough day at the job.

Thanks ever so much for providing tips when it comes to furniture design because I guess it is important to choose the furniture wisely instead of going for just anything that’s cheap and doesn’t match with the garden, etc.

    • Hello Neil my good friend so wonderful to hear from you. Hope all is well wit both you and your family. I know that I am saying this a bit late but HAPPY NEW YEAR it has been a while my friend. So, So, So happy to hear from you and I am so glad that I could help. All the best to you and have a good day.

  3. We just moved to the coast (we are literally 100 yards from the pacific ocean). And since we are in the Pacific NW, it rain a lot here. There are breaks of course and summer is beautiful…but anything left outside doesn’t last very long in this climate.

When it comes to outdoor furniture, do you have any recommendations? Like, should we avoid anything metal? What about care to ensure our furniture lasts as long as possible?

Ideally, we’d like something that could handle a little dampness over the summer. And then we’d put it in dry storage over the winter.

    Thanks for the advice!

    • Hello kmv so good to hear from you. I hear your concern and the good news is there are garden furniture that can withstand dose rainy days. Furniture that is made from cast aluminum, wicker, plastic, teak are among the few that will help. Hope this help, all the best to you. Have a good day.

  4. I love this article! I so agree with having a garden oasis that you can retreat to during the warmer weather. It is like having an outdoor room that you want to make as comfy and relaxing as possible. I started doing this about 8 years ago with my backyard and so look forward to being able to use it every spring.

I agree with you that the size of your furniture as it connects with the size of your garden is important because you don’t want to overtake the beauty of the environment around you either. Also the quality of the furniture is important too as you say because you want it to last a while. Yeah, it may cost a little bit more but it is so worth it.

This has gotten me even more excited about spring and summer. I can’t wait for pretty flowers and nature to watch while sitting on my patio which is my little oasis.

    • Hello Donna that is so great to hear. It is so wonderful to be able to relax in this way. So happy that I could help. All the best to you.

  5. I live in Florida and have a tough time keeping plants alive in the summer. First, we have high temperatures and secondly we get monsoon downpours that flood our plants. Is there any type of shade furniture you would recommend to help alleviate these issues? I was thinking maybe a pergola could restrict a bit of the direct sunlight and direct some of the rain elsewhere to help the plants thrive.

    • Hello so nice to meet you and I feel your pain. A pergola is a great choice and can serve more than one purpose. Why not give it a try.  Please let me know how it goes.

  6. Great post Norman! I am hoping to get some new furniture for my patio, but we get a lot of wind where I live and an umbrella could get blown into the neighbors yard at a moments notice.
Where did you find the second photo of the U-shaped covered bench? I would love to have something like that for my home!
